POTD: Ch'n and me, reigning table tennis champions of the world (well, Datev's house, but it's big enough to be the world), on the ground after our crushing defeat by the whitey girls (Hotev and Kurry). We had previously achieved world champion status by beating the whitey boys (Channy and Fatty David). Why am I touching my nipple?

POTD: A picture of me and my ugliest/bestest friend on earth, Fatty. (Although some of you might call him "David"). Taken right before I left to go back to St. Louis as Winter Break came to an end. It is now dipping below 0 degrees Fahrenheit here. It is cold as balls. But that hat has become extremely essential to my survival. It has earflaps and tassels. What more could I ask for?

POTD: The view from Pellini's, that restaurant on the 28th floor of the Madison Renaissance in downtown. Awfully pretty, eh? Sara and I used a 2-for-1 Entertainment Book coupon and we didn't tip the valet parker, whom we tried to freak out with crazy messages all over the car. My oh my. Quelle romantique!

POTD: Flashback to Fall Break. Trip to Chicago! Crazy weekend, but never really got in what I wanted to get in. Basically, just the Art Institute, but whatever. We may go back. Here's me, Dave Shapiro, and Patrick Burden in front of the Shedd Aquarium. I have no idea why we went there instead of the Art Institute. Whatever. Great picture though.

POTD: This is Edmonds-Woodway's Adventure Club on our hike to the Monte Cristo ghost town, March 6th, 2005. I remember the night before was the pseudo-birthday party I pseudo-planned for Tom, and we had watched 'The Ring,' and I actually didn't sleep at all the entire night. I had to be at school at 6 AM that morning. On no sleep. Geez. Then we hiked 4 miles up the foothills. I had no idea it would be covered in snow and ice. It was actually a comfortable temperature, but I just wasn't expecting snow and ice in early March. I should have, I just didn't. The ghost town was covered in more than a foot of snow, it was rather ridiculous, but somehow rather awesome. I still remember so much of it, which is bizarre, being from so long ago. Good times. In the photo, there's me, Andy Hart, Sara, Channy and a whole hoard of random other people from E-W. Seriously, the most random assortment of people ever. Then we walked 4 miles back down. Wow. It was just ridiculous. And I miss it.

POTD: By "popular demand" (really just David), here's a little color drawing I did last semester. It didn't photograph well (i.e. I didn't photograph it well), but there it is. And there is a terribly terrible story behind this project. This is part of a triptych, all about documenting a week in the life of a specific location. I chose the area around my dorm, and I documented it throughout the semester rather poorly. This was the second part of the triptych that started as a 24" x 30" piece of Arches Rives BFK, but being the last part of my drawing to do, I ended up cropping the hell out of the sheet. I woke up at 6 AM that morning to finish both the second and the third panels of the project, and with the final critique at 1 PM, I had to hurry my ass up like mad. You have no idea how long it is until your teacher finally lets you use color in a project. Well, she told us we didn't have to yet, because we hadn't really learned about it in class (we're actually doing that finally just now). But I decided to just go for it. All ballsy. Hah. Only my second time ever using colored soft pastels. Jeez, what an experience. So, well, it turned out a lot better than I had expected, and my teacher actually said they were the most satisfying drawings she had seen me do up to that point. But really, I thought it was rushed and poorly observed (most especially in the tree). I hate landscapes, I much prefer drawing people, and this was all done from memory as opposed to photography. Well, this story is getting a little long-winded, so I'll just let you look at the picture and explain what's actually going on in it another time. Yeesh. I have a much more impressive monochrome figure sketch that I'd rather post up, but I haven't taken a photo of it yet, it's still in my cubby at the art school. I'll get that up ASAP.

Bonus POTD: This was just an one period in-class exercise, on cheap 24" x 30" sketch paper. I think it was still done reductively with Charkole, but I think I used white Conte and some medium black vine charcoal too. I don't quite remember, this was pretty early in the year. I still struggled with utilizing a wide value range, as well as some other compositional and contour issues. One of my first experiences with a nude model. And, oh boy, I was not prepared for his twice-pierced...sac...eek! Nude drawing class models...yeesh.
POTD: I took pictures of my 1st semester drawing portfolio. Some of it, frankly, is just terrible. But there's definitely signs of progress. This is an early in-class project, 3 classes of 3 hours each, 42" x 36" on Arches Rives BFK, all done in Charkole. It was an experiment with reduction technique, so it was appropriate that we drew this evil still life of a monstrocity of an '80s prom dress, a mannequin's head with a hot pink wig, and a pair of '50s platform shoes. Unfortunately, my easel was set up in a location that the composition is nothing much to be proud of. Oh well, here it is...
